History of Silves: All You Should Know

Silves, a historic town in Portugal, was once the ancient capital of the Algarve region. During the Moorish era, which spanned from the 9th to 12th century, the town served as a major stronghold and an important trading centre. From the solid red-brick castle, the Moors defended the entire region while boats sailed down the Arade River to trade with North Africa.

Iron Age remains have been discovered within the city, along with a well, a governor’s palace, and the Cisterna Grande, a 13th century water cistern that once served the entire town. This cistern, standing ten metres high and supported by six columns, is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Moorish maiden.

In addition to the Moorish era, the city has a history that stretches back to Roman times. The town has changed hands multiple times throughout history, with the Romans, Moors, and Crusaders all leaving their marks.

The Middle Ages were a particularly significant period for Silves, as evidenced by the construction of the Castelo de Silves. This castle, atop the highest point in the town, is widely regarded as the finest example of Arab military architecture in Portugal.

With such a rich past, it is no wonder that the historic centre of Silves is filled with art galleries, craft shops, and cafés, showcasing its culture and history. To further your understanding of the town’s past, a visit to the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia is recommended. This local museum is dedicated to archaeology and features exhibits on Silves’ history, from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages.

Silves Cathedral (Sé Cathedral)

We have a special place in our hearts for the Silves Cathedral – it’s so much more than just a building to us. Way back in 1189, they built it right where an old mosque used to stand. Hermitage of Our Lady of Martyrs

The Hermitage of Our Lady of Martyrs holds a really special and poignant part of history. It was first built in 1189 by King Sancho I as a final resting place for the brave soldiers who lost their lives while taking over the city. The original building isn’t there anymore, but what stands there now is a beautiful mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Mannerist architectural styles. It’s like a visual story of all the years that have passed since then.

The Archeological Museum – The Museu Municipal de Arqueologia

The Archaeological Museum in Silves is an absolute must for anyone interested in history. This place is packed with artefacts and stories from different times – from the Roman era, through the Islamic occupation, all the way to the Christian reconquest.

What’s really cool is that the museum is built around a 12th-century well, discovered back in the 18th century. You’ll get to learn a lot about the town’s past, especially its time under Muslim rule, and how the Arade River helped the town flourish with trade.

You’ll find plenty of English translations, making it easy to understand the importance of what you’re seeing. They’re open from 10 am to 6 pm, but remember, they close a bit early at 5:30 pm. They’re closed on December 25th and January 1st.

Cruz de Portugal

Do you enjoy learning about history? Don’t miss the Cruz de Portugal, a significant religious monument encapsulating Silves’ Christian history. Crafted from white limestone and adorned with intricate carvings, its exact origins are unknown, with estimates placing it anywhere from the late 14th to the late 15th century. It is widely believed to have been gifted to Silves by D. Manuel I in 1499.

The cross, standing at 3 meters and showcasing Christ crucified and a poignant Pietà, is a striking example of Flamboyant Gothic style. Its name, “Cruz de Portugal,” and the non-local limestone suggest origins outside the Algarve, possibly Lisbon.

Over the years, the cross has moved around the city, settling in its current 19th-century location in 1957, surrounded by a tranquil garden, adding to its mystique and reverence.
