Algarve in Winter: What to Expect?

Travelling to the Algarve during winter months like December, January, and February can lead to substantial savings on accommodations, with discounts reaching up to 50% in many hotels and resorts. Additionally, flight tickets and car rentals tend to be more affordable during the low season, making it an enticing time for a comfortable and luxurious getaway.

In winter, the Algarve tends to be much quieter, with fewer tourists, allowing travelers to enjoy the region’s beauty without near as much human activity. Visiting during the off-season means less time spent queuing, dealing with parking hassles, and competing for the perfect photo spots at popular attractions like Benagil Cave and Praia do Camilo. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy the serenity of picturesque locations without the buzz of busy peak season surrounds.

However, be aware that some shops and restaurants might be closed during winter, though there should still be a variety of delightful eateries available to satisfy your cravings for local dishes. If the Algarve’s nightlife is on your agenda, it may be best to visit during summer, when the bars are open and bustling.

December Weather in the Algarve: How Much It Rains During Winter

The Algarve benefits from more than 300 days of sunshine per year, which means it is likely one can experience warm, sunny weather even in winter. That being said, it is wise to be prepared for the occasional rainy and windy days in the region.

Algarve in December offers pleasant daytime temperatures, averaging around 18°C (64°F), with nighttime lows of approximately 9°C (48°F). Expect an average daytime temperature of 13-14°C (55-57°F).
